What is a good net worth?
A good net worth is one above the median for people your age. Across all U.S. families, the median in the Federal Reserve’s 2025 survey was $215,900, so anything above that beats half the country. The 75th percentile was about $813,000. The top 10% starts near $2.5 million.
Age changes the bar completely. The median was $33,000 for families under 35, $155,600 for 35 to 44, $253,700 for 45 to 54, $411,900 for 55 to 64, and $504,900 for 75 and older. A 30-year-old with $150,000 is ahead of three quarters of their age group. A 60-year-old with the same amount is behind most of theirs.
What counts as a respectable net worth?
Respectable usually means somewhere between the median and the 75th percentile for your age, with the number moving up each year. The direction matters more than the level. A family going from $20,000 to $60,000 in three years is doing better than one sitting still at $400,000.
