What percentage of Americans have a net worth over $300,000?

About 43% of U.S. families had a net worth above $300,000 in the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances. That puts $300,000 around the 57th percentile, a step above the $215,900 median.

The share rises steeply with age, because home equity and retirement balances take decades to build:

  • Under 35: about 13% of families are above $300,000
  • 35 to 44: about 33%
  • 45 to 54: about 46%
  • 55 to 64: about 54%
  • 65 to 74: about 58%
  • 75 and older: about 62%

So $300,000 is a top-15% result for someone in their twenties and a below-average one for a retiree. These figures count families rather than individuals, and include home equity. For the full percentile table by age, see average net worth by age.
