What percent of 40 year olds are millionaires?
About 13%. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances doesn’t report single ages, but for families headed by someone 35 to 44, roughly 13% had a net worth of $1 million or more. That’s a family measure, counting home equity and retirement accounts, so a couple’s combined position counts once.
For comparison, about 2% of families under 35 are millionaires, about 24% of those 45 to 54, and about a third of those 55 to 64. Across all ages the share is about 21.5%, so 40-year-olds are below the national rate because they have had less time.
The median family in the 35 to 44 bracket had $155,600, and the top 10% started near $1.23 million. So a millionaire at 40 is well inside the top 15% of their peers.
If you count only money that can be spent, without the house, the share is smaller. For the full breakdown by age, see how net worth compares by age.
