What is a good net worth by 30?

The Federal Reserve’s 2025 survey groups everyone under 35 together, so there is no exact figure for age 30. In that group the median net worth was $33,000 and the average $135,400. The 75th percentile was about $145,000 and the top 10% started near $351,000.

So by 30, anything above $33,000 beats half of your peers, and $100,000 or more puts you comfortably in the top third. Keep in mind the under-35 group includes 22-year-olds with student loans, which pulls the median down. A 30-year-old is at the older end of the bracket and should expect to be above its median.

A negative number is common at this age. About 8% of all families owe more than they own, and the share is higher under 35. What matters at 30 is the slope: paying down debt and starting retirement contributions moves the number fast from here.
