At what age does wealth peak?
In the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, both the median and the average net worth were highest for families headed by someone 75 or older: a median of $504,900 and an average of $1,962,200. The 65 to 74 group was close behind at $431,300 and $1,897,600, and 55 to 64 came next at $411,900 and $1,878,000.
Two things keep wealth rising past retirement. Homes are usually paid off by then, and many retirees draw down their investments more slowly than planners assume.
One caution: this compares today’s 75-year-olds with today’s 40-year-olds, and today’s 75-year-olds bought their houses in the 1980s. Your own peak depends on when you retire and how fast you draw down.
Every age bracket’s median, average and percentiles are in the median and average net worth by age tables.
