What is a good net worth at 55?

At 55 you’re at the young end of the Federal Reserve’s 55 to 64 bracket, the group with the biggest numbers before retirement. In the 2025 survey its median net worth was $411,900 and its average $1,878,000. The 25th percentile was about $72,000, the 75th about $1.42 million, and the top 10% started near $3.46 million. About a third of these families are millionaires.

A good net worth at 55 is above that $411,900 median, and a strong one is above $1 million. At this age, what the money is in matters as much as the total. A million in retirement accounts pays about $40,000 a year at a 4% withdrawal rate. A million in home equity pays nothing until you sell.

If you’re below the median, you still have the highest-earning, highest-contribution years ahead, including catch-up contributions after 50. Compare your number with the 55 to 64 net worth table.
