Net worth calculator / Net worth FAQ / What counts, and why
Does a 401(k) count as net worth?
Yes. Count your 401(k) at its full current balance, along with any IRA, 403(b), TSP or similar account. The money is yours and it grows with the market, so it belongs with your assets.
A traditional 401(k) is taxed when you withdraw, and withdrawals before age 59½ generally owe a 10% additional tax on top. Those are costs of taking the money out early. Net worth measures what you own today, and the full balance is yours today.
Leave it out only when you work out liquid net worth, which counts money you could use within a few days without a penalty. For a plain net worth figure, enter the full balance in the calculator.
Only count the part that is vested. Employer matching that you would lose by leaving your job today isn’t yours yet.
